Lost at School by Ross W Greene
A book about kids with behavioural challenges and a good method of dealing with their problems. Probably the biggest message in this story, at this stage is that the behaviour the child shows is not the problem, the problem is the contributing factors to the behaviour and the child’s lack of skills in dealing with this stress or pressure. For example, a child may lash out (physically, verbally) because he doesn’t understand a task. The problem is not that the child lashed out, but that the child had difficulty understanding the task and did not know how to use their words to ask for help or whatever was required in order to help them complete the task. While I am only up to chapter 3 - it is a 10 hour long listen, the main points in this story are extremely helpful. I am hoping that the next few chapters will reveal strategies about teaching these skills to the children - often the problem can be identified but strategies to help teach the skills required are not. If a child had a full set of skills to deal with the stresses and pressures of life, they are less likely to “act out”.
